The Back StoryMore: The game of checkers is played with 2 players, each having 12 game pieces (typically disks of two colors). Each disk is called a checker. A checkerboard can be used for various games (including checkers) and usually has 64 squares in two alternating colors. The game is also played internationally, but outside the U.S. the game is called “draughts.” The rules for draughts are a bit different than for American-style checkers. In either game, the winner captures all of the opponent's pieces or makes it impossible for the opponent to continue using legal moves.
