The Back StoryMore: Originally intended as specialty game for the 1913 Christmas edition of
the New York World, this well loved puzzle was initially known as
“Word-Cross.” After its debut, so many readers wrote in to praise the
puzzle that the World decided to make it a permanent feature of the
puzzle page. How did it come to be known as Crossword, rather than
Word-Cross? One month after the initial puzzle appeared, typesetters at
the newspaper mistakenly transposed the words in the title to read
“Cross-Word.” The new name stuck, and so did the puzzle!
At a recent gift show, a librarian came in looking for a gift for her 34
library volunteers. The Crossword Puzzle Ornament was just what she
was looking for.
