The Back Story

More:
The art of making Kokeshi dolls originated in the early 19th century in the Tohuku region of Japan. Woodworkers (Kijiya) began making the dolls to sell to tourists that visited the area's hot springs. Kokeshi dolls typically feature a round head on a simple cylindrical body. The wood used in traditional Kokeshi dolls is often cherry, dogwood or Japanese maple.

The carp is a symbol of perseverance. This fish is admired for its strength and determination to swim upstream. Being tenacious is a quality desired in children as they grow to adulthood. The carp motif is often found on decorations for Children's Day, a national holiday in Japan.
