The Back StoryMore: British inventor James Henry Atkinson gets credit for the modern mousetrap. Called the "Little Nipper," his spring loaded trap snaps shut in just .038 of a second. While cheese is the bait popularly depicted in snap traps, peanut butter is more frequently used because it is harder for the mouse to pull off the trap.
In the 1920s another inventor, Austin Kness, patented a humane mouse trap designed to catch mice live, without the use of bait.
