The Back Story More: The names for Santa's reindeer first originated in the poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas."  (There is some argument about the original name of that poem and its true author.)  The names symbolize three themes: Power: Donner and Blitzen were originally named in Dutch "Dunder" ("Thunder") and "Blixem" ("Lightening").  Speed: Dasher, Comet and Cupid (Cupid has wings). Gracefulness: Dancer, Prancer and Vixen (a female fox). Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939 at the request of his employer, Montgomery Ward, to create a promotional Christmas story for its stores.
