The Back StoryMore: A tomato is the large-rounded fruit or berry of a perennial herb (Lycopersicon). The plant that produces these usually red or yellow fruits is also called a tomato. The tomato is grown worldwide, with thousands of varieties available. Tomatoes vary in size, from ¼” in diameter (cherry tomatoes) to 4” in diameter (beefsteak tomatoes). Most tomato varieties produce red fruit, but a number have yellow, orange, pink, purple, green, black, or white fruit colors.
