The Back StoryMore: Fossil indicate sea turtles first appeared 200 million years ago. Female tutles nest and lay their eggs on sandy beaches. When taking an early morning stroll, you might see what looks like a large tire track running across the sand. This is the track made by a female turtle, returning to the sea.
6 of the 7 species of Marine Turtle are endangered. The reasons for
this are several and include the fact that turtles have many young but
few survive, turtles take decades to reach breeding maturity, nesting
beaches are encroached on by humans, the turtles are used in Chinese
medicine, and are often caught in fishing nets. Help protect this
endangered species. Visit World
Wildlife's Marine Turtles page.
