The Back Story More: Called shaved ice (but often spelled “shave” ice) in Hawaii, these icy cooling treats come in a rainbow of colors and flavors. Blocks of ice are shaved and then covered with flavored syrups. Shaving (instead of grinding or crushing) the ice holds the flavor—from the first to last bite. Ask for azuki beans and get an extra sweet and chewy flavor in the middle. For people who live on the mainland, these delectable delights are called snow cones! It seems snow cones are enjoyed world-wide.  Cubans call them “granizados.” In the Southwestern US they are “raspado.”  Those from  the Dominican Republic  say “frio frio” (Spanish word for cold). Italians describe them as “Italian Ice” while Filipinos ask for “halo halo.”  Other names include: Kakigori  (Japan); Piragua (Puerto Rico); Minutas (El Salvador); and Cepillados (Venezuela).
