The Back Story
More: Whether you call it a parasol, brolly, sunshade bumbershoot, or
umbrella, these collapsible contrivances provide protection from
weather. Invented over 4,000 years ago, umbrellas were used only by
women (in England) until the late 1700s. Apparently, having the good
sense to get out of the rain (or sun) was taboo for the male gender. Are
we surprised?
