The Back StoryMore: The history of billiards is long and very rich. Played by kings,
commoners, ladies, gentlemen, and hustlers alike, the game has evolved
from a lawn game similar to croquet to an indoor game played on a wooden
table with green cloth to simulate grass. Pool, or Pocket Billiards,
is a variation of billiards played on a smaller table with six pockets.
The origins of the name “Pool” are quite colorful. In the
1800s, "Poolrooms" were far from the gaming rooms we know today. A
Poolroom was a betting parlor where “pools” of money were wagered on
everything from horse races to poker. Pocket billiards were installed
to entertain the people while they waited on results. Before long, the
game itself became synonymous with – well, as Professor Harold Hill
would say, “Trouble! With a capital T, and that rhymes with P and that
stands for Pool!”
Whether you’re a basement billiards champ, or
professional pool player, this game of strategy and skill is Fun (with a
capital F!)
