Concerned about the immodest dress (nakedness) of Hawaiian women, appropriate western-style attire was one of the first goals of religious conversion. Originally Mu’umu’us were slips worn under holoku gowns that were adapted in style to accommodate large Hawaiian women and the hot, tropical climate.
