The Back StoryMore: Mmmm, popcorn, the salty treat that moviegoers can’t live without. Surprisingly, popcorn was not always synonymous with movie theaters. In fact, wanting their movie palaces to remain upscale, free from the snacking behavior found at burlesque shows, concessions of all kinds were snubbed--until the Great Depression.
Cash-strapped like everyone else, theaters sought new ways to make a buck. It wasn’t long before they recognized the lucrative promise of popcorn; sold for just 10 cents a bag, a tidy profit could still be made. It was a delicious treat that even Depression-era Americans could afford to splurge on. And thus, a movie icon was born!
