Champagne Ornament Traditions:
This might come as a surprise, but the French were not the first to invent sparkling wine. That honor goes to England (if by “invent” you mean sparkling wine made deliberately, through a reproducible process). Although the earliest sparkling wines were a happy accident, caused by a second fermentation of young white wine shipped in casks during warm weather, the first deliberate attempt to bottle bubbles was undertaken by England’s Sir George Etheredge in 1676.
The earliest documentation of France's achievements dates to 1698. The fact that most people believe Dom Pierre Pérignon (of France’s Champagne Region) invented the bubbly stuff is one of history’s most brilliant PR achievements. |
