The Back Story

The Chinoiserie style depicts Chinese-inspired decorative motifs. Although many attribute this style of art to Chinese artists, Chinoiserie are western interpretations of Chinese decoration. Chinoiserie became part of European art and decor in the mid to late 17th century. Noteable artists that incorporated chinoiserie into their works include Athanasius Kircher and François Boucher.
